Divine Infinity: Boundless and Eternal
Understanding God’s Boundless Nature Beyond Time and Space
Divine Infinity: Boundless and Eternal
Let’s look at our own limitations and compare them to God’s infinity; this will help us better understand the point of Divine Infinity.
Space Limit: Our skin, as the outermost layer, acts like a thin shell, forming the boundary of our body that restricts us. This boundary limits the scope of our physical being, giving our body a clear demarcation in space, separating it from everything else. In a word: everything in space has a boundary or limit.
Time Limit: Since birth, our bodies generally live on this earth for about seventy or eighty years, with longer lifespans reaching a little over a hundred years. Short lifespans may be only thirty or forty years. Regardless, we will all face death. This is because our bodies are subject to the constraints of time. Everything under the constraint of time has a process of birth and death.
Emotion Limit: What about our love? In truth, it is also limited. We are able to love our family members, such as parents, siblings, spouses, and children. Our love may extend to neighbors and friends, and perhaps even to acquaintances in our community. However, our emotions are ultimately limited. For instance, we may love our neighbors and friends enough to lend a hand when needed, but we don’t love them as deeply as we love our own family. The degree and depth of our love represent our emotional limit.
Intellect Limit: Though we continuously learn throughout our lives, our knowledge is always finite. From the moment we are born, we begin to acquire knowledge, accumulating it through childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age. Yet, there are still countless things we do not know.
In contrast to us, God has no such limitations.
God is not limited by time or space. To be precise, God introduced space and time when He created the world. This means that God is omnipresent (everywhere at once); no matter when or where you are, you can sense God with you. His infinity relative to space is expressed as boundless, and His infinity relative to time is expressed as eternal.
God’s love is infinite and is never divided or diminished. No matter how many of us there are, God loves every single person. He thoroughly, completely, and deeply knows the totality of each of us. God’s love for every individual is equally powerful and infinite.
God’s wisdom is infinite, encompassing all knowledge and understanding. Human wisdom and knowledge are merely a tiny fraction of God’s endless wisdom and knowledge. God’s wisdom directs all things at all times and in all places.
In the natural world, every grain of sand on the beach is unique. Not only does each one have a different shape, but they also possess their own unique structure and color. When snowflakes fall, every snowflake is unique; each flake has its own distinct texture and structure. In the plant kingdom, no two leaves are exactly the same. In the animal kingdom, no two animals are exactly alike. From the beginning of creation, to the present, and on into the unimaginably distant future, we know that there will never be two exactly identical things.
So, why are we so certain of the uniqueness of everything?
This uniqueness is precisely the expression of God’s infinity. Only within God’s infinite creativity can every single object maintain its uniqueness among an endless number of things.
This point is even more evident in the living plant and animal kingdoms. A tiny seed pushes through the dirt, becomes a seedling, and as time passes, this small plant continuously grows until it finally flowers and bears fruit. The fruit contains hundreds or thousands of seeds, which fall to the ground, preparing for the next life cycle. Every seed presents an image of infinity and eternity, because they possess an inherent power to infinitely self-reproduce and bear fruit, continuing forever. The same is true for animals; without external interference and limits, any species could infinitely self-reproduce forever. These vividly illustrate God’s infinite wisdom.
God’s infinity is clearly seen in many verses of the Bible. Here are just two excerpts:
“Am I a God at hand, declares Jehovah, and not a God afar off? Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? Do I not fill heaven and earth?” declares Jehovah. (Jeremiah 23:23–24)
For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night. (Psalm 90:4)
